Dia De Los Muertos Is Not Your Halloween by Nuestra Hermana

As we all know, Halloween in America is right around the corner. Kids & adults alike will be dressed up in costumes, consuming candy, attending parties, navigating through haunted houses and thoroughly enjoying their night. Think about your last Halloween and look at the images above.

These are still shots of Dia De Los Muertos in Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, California & Arizona. They are small snippets of a vibrant, important and REAL holiday for Latin@s. This is not your Halloween.

Dia De Los Muertos developed out of over 2,500 years of indigenous ritual celebrating death and paying respects to loved ones who have passed away. Scholars state that the Aztecs originally held a month long festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl, the ruler of the afterlife.

After Spanish colonization and many attempts to eradicate the rituals & festival, a new merging with the Catholic holidays All Souls Day & All Saints Day developed over time to what is now Dia De Los Muertos.

Dia De Los Muertos is celebrated November 1st & 2nd (in alignment with All Saints Day & All Souls Day respectively). It is NOT celebrated on October 31st, it is not tied in with Halloween in America at all.

In Mexico, November 1st is dedicated as Dia De Los Inocentes, a day to honor and respect the innocents, children & infants to be more specific. November 2nd is Dia De Los Muertos, the day to honor deceased adults.

On these days, altars are made in honor of them. People build them on their loved ones graves, at home or anywhere they find rightful to honor their loved ones. They make ofrendas (offerings) to the dead of their favorite foods, toys (for children), pictures, pan de muertos, sugar skulls and many other things that help guide the spirits of the dead safely to the altars. Marigolds, known as the flowers of the dead, are usually prominent in the altars.

In Mexico, many people sleep overnight at the graves. Every ritual & altar is not the same everywhere. Many places have their own traditions and ways of honoring the dead. One thing is for sure, Dia De Los Muertos is not Halloween. It is a sacred time and holiday for Latin@s everywhere.

So, when you’re dressing up for Halloween remember: doing this, this, this or this is not only disrespectful but it is also a erasure of someone’s real life culture. Think before you walk out of that door.

i don’t think painting sugar skull designs on your face is automatically disrespectful… i’d say it has to do with how they behave with it on. lots of people find sugar skulls extremely beautiful, and the day of Dia de los Muertos very moving, etc. and they could easily be wearing it in reverence and respect for the culture and tradition. i am of no mexican heritage but i celebrate Dia in my own way to honor the year’s beloved dead, does that make me an erasive jerk?

and as for belittling halloween like that… what about the people for whom halloween [aka Samhain] /is/ an extremely sacred and spiritual day? that’s just as erasive.

so many of you may not know this but i have a boyfriend [despite my very strongly lesbian-leaning orientation… it’s a long story lol] and every autumn he works at the local renaissance festival

he’s an actor, and he and a couple of his friends are one of the several groups that goes around the place and sings for small audiences.

so naturally my boyfriend has this awesome costume

and his character is a bit of a womanizer

and i’m definitely going to get him to sex me up in costume + accent + character at SOME POINT this weekend.

you are all so jealous of me.

i’m trying to watch the first series of pokemon all the way through

and now thanks to events at work today i checked out dbz kai and i want to re-watch THAT all the way through [because how many people do you know who can say they have seen the entire DBZ series? i’m one of those people >:P though i’ve yet to do so with dragonball, and little interest in GT to be honest]

so i’ve finally been convinced [by watching a best-of video] that i need to go back and watch EVERY SINGLE VLOGBROTHERS VIDEO starting all the way back with the original brotherhood 2.0 in 2007.

humans are not, however, herbivores. humans are omnivores who are capable of maintaining themselves on an herbivore’s diet, and capable of doing so quite well, if they’re smart about it. but to say that humans evolved to be herbivores is… not understanding evolution.

i could make another huge chart stating the similarities of humans to carnivores and differences with herbivores. and it wouldn’t make a bit of difference, as it doesn’t matter what we look like, but what our bodies are capable of making into ATP. [not all carnivores/herbivores share those stated traits, btw.] this is an extremely biased and not at all scientific chart, if i say so myself.

i’m saying nothing at all to the tune of “we should eat meat”, for the record. my views on this are not vegan views, but not carnivore views either. and more importantly, they’re /my/ views, and mine alone. i respect other people enough not to try and force on them my ideals. not that that would work, anyway. nothing against you, personally. it just chaps my ass a bit sometimes the way the vegan movement tries to get all evangelical. it doesn’t work, and PETA is proof. things need to change, certainly, but they’re not gonna change that way.

OVERconsumption, sure, i’d believe that even without any sources. overdose on any chemical[s] and you’ll get problems. moderation in all things, etc. lol

and do you mean like, what’s the evidence that we ate meat previously in our evolution? i guess it would be our inherent desire to eat it, coupled with the number of species in our immediate evolutionary family [i.e. apes, monkeys etc.]

and a physically suggestive structure right off the top of my head would be the appendix. afaik no one is clear on its function or previous function [as it’s vestigial], but i’ve heard the thought that it was once used for digesting raw meat, before we started to cook ours and lost the ability to eat it raw anymore.

sorry i can’t give more concise answers; as much into biology/anatomy as i am, i’ve not compared the digestive systems of meat- and plant-eaters [or all the things in between] for myself. though now i’d kinda like to!

Well, really just eating meat in general can cause problems in people… red meat doesn’t digest at all in the human body and actually rots in your colon. (colon cancer) If you have diabetes or heart disease, most doctors will recommend switching to a vegetarian diet. It just seems like to me it causes more harm than good.

I know from a evolutionary stand-point we were maybe designed to consume meat, but we have evolved as human beings, not just physically, but that’s another topic all together.

Even in fish, there are many chemicals in most fish that aren’t healthy to be consumed…

er… no, meat does no such thing in the colon. well, really you have to define “rot”. if by rot you mean “gets eaten by bacteria,” which is actually a pretty good definition of rotting, then yes, that is exactly what happens. but that is not a problem at all, that is a completely natural part of digestion that many if not all animals, meat-eaters or not, use. everything your body’s enzymes cannot break down gets passed to bacteria in the large intestine to have their way with, and what’s left after that is, well, poop. haha. as far as i know that has nothing to do with cancer.

grains and veggies, however, DO ferment in the colon, and from there you get things like beans making you gassy!

as for fish, everyone knows about fish being full of mercury and all that. the vast majority of it is at arguably safe levels. but naturally that depends greatly on where the fish comes from, and where one’s meat comes from is an important factor in whether or not some people will eat it, including me.

- a bird’s nest with the skeleton of a tiny hatchling inside it [i may not even really mess with this, just photograph it and show you as is! it’s so tiny]

- i’m about to recieve a whole entire hummingbird, whose wings [also feet] i plan to pin and salt down to dry out, and as many of whose feathers as possible i will be keeping. i will also try to get the bones but they are soooooooo tiny.

- i may also pin and salt the skin of my snake, which has been in the freezer for ages. or if i get a little money, send it to the local taxidermist to tan professionally.

also: my landlords showed me a rattlesnake skin they had done and oh my godddd i want a rattler skin SO BAD now. @w@ it was gorgeous
